Testing Your ABM Pilot Campaign

An ABM pilot lets you test your approach with a small, defined set of accounts. The goal is to validate your messaging, channels, and content before scaling to a larger program. Start with 10–50 high-value accounts and give yourself a full quarter to measure performance and decide whether to scale, refine, or pivot.

5 Steps to Run Your ABM Pilot

ABM is an enterprise B2B growth strategy that treats each high-value account as a market of one. Success comes from tailoring outreach, content, and engagement to a company’s unique industry drivers, decision-making process, and revenue model. For enterprises, this means doubling down on strategic accounts where expansion and influence matter most. But before any ABM program officially kicks off, it’s important to invest in the following steps.

1. Define your ICP (Ideal Customer Profile)

Who do you intend to target in your pilot program? Clarify who you’re targeting: persona, role, company size, and vertical. Keep it narrow enough to generate clear insights.

2. Map your key messaging

Build your campaign around a proven problem you solve and the outcome you deliver. Repurpose this message across ads, landing pages, and emails.

👉 For example:

  • If your ICP is an IT leader struggling with expensive hosting costs, your messaging should highlight that pain point and position your company as the cost-saving alternative.
  • If your ICP is a marketing leader frustrated with poor attribution visibility, frame your solution as the way to unlock accurate, real-time campaign performance insights.

If your ICP is a finance leader facing regulatory compliance risks, demonstrate how your platform ensures compliance and reduces audit headaches.

For ads, keep headlines problem-and-solution focused. Questions like “Struggling with rising hosting costs?” often earn higher clicks because they mirror the prospect’s own concerns.

For landing pages, make sure the message mirrors the ad so the prospect feels immediate continuity. The page should directly explain how your company solves the problem for that ICP, and it should include assets that reinforce the solution—such as case studies, ROI calculators, short videos, or customer testimonials. Keep the layout easy to scan, aligned to your ad/email messaging, and focused on the specific outcomes your solution delivers.

Personalize beyond surface-level details. Speak directly to each account’s goals and challenges. For your top-tier accounts, create one-to-one assets like custom briefs, tailored documents, or short video messages.

3. Build a focused account list

Use firmographics (company size, revenue, industry), behavioral signals (site visits, webinar attendance, content downloads), and third-party intent data (research activity across the web) to identify accounts already showing buying interest. These insights help you prioritize accounts more likely to engage and convert. Don’t forget to consider existing customers for cross-sell and upsell opportunities.

4. Select your channels

Don’t spread too thin. Choose a few high-impact channels such as personalized email, LinkedIn ads, targeted display, or direct mail.

👉 LinkedIn should be a centerpiece of your ABM pilot. Use it both for Sales outreach. Equip your sales team with LinkedIn outreach email templates (InMail and connection requests) so they can engage contacts inside your target accounts with personalized, problem-solution messaging. Note the content on your landing page should also be in these outreach emails.

5. Orchestrate and launch

Package your content, map each channel, and create a simple playbook. Assign Sales and Marketing stakeholders to own execution and ensure follow-up is aligned.
